Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish
This Week's Top Ten is all about Bookish Confessions. What kind of bookish secrets do Carrie and I want to confess? Check um out below.
Carrie's Top 5 Bookish Confessions:
1) My husband bought me a Nook so he wouldn't have to keep buying bookshelves but I keep buying more physical copies anyway. Darn you Salt Lake City with all your great authors and book signings.
| The King's English Bookshop in SLC |
2) As mentioned above I keep buying more and more books which means I can't keep up with reading them all. My TBR stack is out of control. I counted all of them the other day but I'm going to keep that number to myself. I'm in denial.
3) I love my library and use it quite frequently which means the books I own are still not getting read. Sigh.
4) Even though my shelves are bursting at the seams I can't part with a single book. I think I might have a slight problem. Lol
5) Since I covet my books, I have a hard time loaning them out (I do but it isn't easy...lol) because I'm very anal about their condition. I don't like broken spines, dog-eared pages or ripped/nicked/bent covers. When I purchase books from the store I have to pull them all off the shelf so I can buy the best looking one. Also when reading hardcover books, the dust jacket comes off so there is less chance it will get damaged in any way.
*Well there you have it, I'm an anal book hoarder but isn't the first step to recovery admitting you have a problem? Hi, my name is Carrie and I have a book addiction.
Shannon's Top 5 Bookish Confessions:
1) I am a book pusher, LOL! I can get many of my friends to read books they wouldn't normally read. The sad part is a lot of times its books I've heard amazing things about but haven't actually read myself.
2) I'm a serious bookmark hoarder and because of this I have to keep giveaway swag separate from my own stash. I currently have over 4 envelopes filled with various bookmarks which I have no intention of parting with...like ever!

3) I have wasted perfectly good reading time watching entire series on Netflix. My most recent addictions have been: Pretty Little Liars, Dance Academy, Alphas and Falling Skies. To save myself and this blog it had to go. Bye, Bye Netflix you will be missed. Phew...I should have way more time for reading now.
4) YA books helped me become a better reader. This might sound like an odd thing to say but I wasn't the best reader when I was young and sometimes I still struggle. In middle school if I had to read aloud in class it was complete and utter fear. I always tripped over words and had a hard time with pronunciation. This caused me to read less and less as I got older, but the thing is I loved the transformative power books gave me. I didn't want to lose that so instead I found books that made reading enjoyable. It started with Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and I've been reading YA ever since.
5) Most likely I'm not reading what you're reading and I'm okay with that. I've been told by many bloggers and readers that they've never heard of the book I'm reading: 172 Hours on the Moon, Five Flavors of Dumb, Mister Death's Blue-Eyed Girls, The Space Between and so on. It's not that I don't enjoy reading the bigger name titles, its just I love drawing attention to the under the radar book. Its one of the thing I like most about blogging. Helping others find a book they might have otherwise overlooked. What can I say I'm a sucker for the underdog.

I so can relate to #5, Carrie. I like to keep my books looking their best, and I compare the quality of books at the store.
ReplyDelete#1 and #5 are great confessions, Shannon! I always like finding out about under the radar books - thanks for giving them their due!
Carrie - I feel the same way about my books. I only get rid of ones I cannot stand. I actually threw away a book (well, recycled it, really) - I felt it was so bad that the library shouldn't have it on its shelf!
ReplyDeleteShannon - I hear ya about reading speeds. I have been reading for over 40 years, and you would think that it would be like typing... you get faster with experience... not so with me.
Hopping by to say Hi! Hope you have a chance to read my Bookish Confessions!
I can't part with any of books either. I tell myself that I'll give some away, but I always find an excuse to keep them. Only the ones I hate do I giveaway.
ReplyDeleteBeing a librarian has cured me of book hoarding. In fact, I now only buy books for myself if I am sure that I will reread it or I have to have it for book club. I am a big fan of libraries where books are free.
ReplyDeleteNice list(s).
ReplyDeleteCarrie's no. 2 is something I long since resigned myself to. Inheriting more than a hundred volumes recently has added to the problem. I do, however not have problem no. 4 - I get rid of around 9 out of every 10 books I buy.
Shannon's no. 2 I am also familiar with - I actively collect bookmarks and keep them in a big old stamp book.
Carrie, I keep buying books even though I have a million to read. You are definitely not alone there.
ReplyDeleteShannon, The Outsiders was the game changer for me. I had a hard time with reading until then. Also, I ordered Speak from the Scholastic catalog in middle school and it just blew me away. I think I read it once a month for a year.
Great lists, ladies! :)
My Confessions
Carrie - I'm the same way. I keep telling myself I'll be able to read them *sometime*.
ReplyDeleteShannon - I read WHILE watching my Netflix. ;) Unless I'm really into a show, I typically have no problem. I'm a multi-tasker at heart. I'm definitely with you on #5 too, I read the popular stuff too, but some of those little-known books are so much better!
I also look for the best book when I buy one in the stores :p My TBR pile is out of control (the same for my wish list) but I keep buying them anyway. I love bookmarks ^^
ReplyDeleteMy top 10 Tuesday.
Loaning books to friends is really difficult. What if they don't mind them or worse not give them back. A friend borrowed my copy of Harry Potter book 1 and lost it. Disaster!
ReplyDeleteSHANNON! You ditched Netflix? I can't even fathom this.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love that you draw attention to lesser-known titles. I confess to sometimes loving the really popular ones, but does being the hundredth blogger to gush about a popular book REALLY make a difference like gushing about one no one's heard of?
Here's my TTT!
Shannon, I salute you for ditching Netflix. I did and I just upgraded my Hulu Plus account instead :/
ReplyDeleteMy Confessions!
Carrie, your book collection is like my fabric/craft collection. Even if you never get around to reading them all, don't they make you happy just seeing them all stacked beautifully on your shelves? :-)
ReplyDeleteCarrie, I'll never admit my real TBR number either. And my shelves are full and I still have a couple of stacks in a few places. I have a hard time parting with books too. They're like my babies, almost. :)
ReplyDeleteShannon, I love that you are reading 'different' books although I don't really think they're *all that* different. I like your style!
Oh hey, I'm a fellow book hoarder, too! It's not a problem, it's a condition, and I happen to like it! *grin* Or something.
ReplyDeleteGreat confessions - thanks for sharing!
Netflix is also cutting into my reading time! I just found balance. I always go to bed at least an hour before I want to be asleep to make sure I have some time to read. Plus, with my ereader I read while I cook and fold laundry and stuff, haha
ReplyDeleteI waste so much time watching TV shows on Netflix too! I can't stop. But I am not ready to give up Netflix just yet. While I am watching TV I try to work on my blog, though.
ReplyDeleteI love Five Flavors of Dumb and can't wait to get my hands on Mister Death's Blue-Eyed Girls!
ReplyDeleteThаnks on your mаrѵеlous posting!
ReplyDeleteI seriously enjoyed rеаding it, уou might be а
