Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish
This Week's Top Ten is a Freebie which made it hard to decide what to pick. After giving it a LOT of thought and discussing the topic with Lauren from The Housework Can Wait, I have decided to pick:
Top 10 So You Think You Can Dance routines that Could (And Should) Inspire a Book
I'm a HUGE fan of the show and have recently discovered how many authors love it as much as I do. Some have even mentioned that the show has inspired story ideas and characters.
*Side Note about the list: These are in no particular order. I love all this routines equally and would gladly read any book that was inspired by them.
1). Cosmic Love - Choreographer: Dee Caspary, Dancers: Ashley & Ade, Season: 7
*Idea behind routine: The girl is broken and not able to move on her own. The boy is there every step of the way to help her.
Why I'd Read A Book About It - Lots of YA books deal with broken girls but I love this idea of someone going through something difficult/ or life shattering and knowing without any doubt that she isn't alone.
2). Night of the Dancing Flame - Choreographer: Wade Robson, Dancers: Lauren & Neil, Season: 3
*Idea behind routine: A wicked villain (devil) is parading around as a good guy to try and capture the innocent girl (angel).
Why I'd Read A Book About It - Hello, can we say the perfect YA Paranormal book of good versus evil. One where the cute, mysterious guy is NOT a love interest but the antagonist who needs to watch out for our butt kicking otherworldly heroine.
3). I Got You - Choreographers: Tabitha & Napolean, Dancers: Melanie & Marko, Season: 8
*Idea behind routine: A woman tries to cheer up her best friend after he's been left at the alter.
Why I'd Read A Book About It - I think it goes without saying that best friends, weddings and hidden feelings tend to make things interesting.
4). Tore My Heart - Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh, Dancers: Ellenore & Jakob, Season: 6
Why I'd Read A Book About It - I think it goes without saying that best friends, weddings and hidden feelings tend to make things interesting.
4). Tore My Heart - Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh, Dancers: Ellenore & Jakob, Season: 6
*Idea behind routine: The boy tore her heart out.
Why I'd Read A Book About It - There seems to be a lot of anger, hostility and bitterness going on in this relationship. Are these two still together? Seems like it, but why? I'd die to explore the rest of their story.
5). Collide - Choreographer: Travis Wall, Dancers: Lauren & Kent, Season: 7
*Idea Behind Routine: Teens at prom
Why I'd Read A Book About It - Because who doesn't love a good coming of age story. These two kids are clearly in love but the question becomes how will they deal with high school, and perhaps even their relationship, coming to an end.
6). Dancing - Choreographer: Mia Michaels, Dancers: Lacey & Kameron, Season: 3
*Idea Behind Routine: A couple that is broken
Why I'd Read A Book About It - What happen to these two? Why are they broken? Do they have some kind of addiction? They seem to have this NEED to support each other, even though it might not be good for them. Want more...
7). Heavy In Your Arms - Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh, Dancers: Caitlynn & Marko, Season: 8
*Idea Behind Routine: An overbearing man and the woman who is trying to find the strength to leave him
Why I'd Read A Book About It - Actually, I'm not sure I'd want to read this book since it'd likely make me really angry or incredible sad. Either way though it would definitely get a reaction out of me and isn't that what good storytelling is suppose to do.
8). If It Kills Me - Choreographer: Travis Wall, Dancers: Jeanine & Jason, Season: 5
8). If It Kills Me - Choreographer: Travis Wall, Dancers: Jeanine & Jason, Season: 5
*Idea Behind Routine: Two friends who might miss their chance to be together if they don't deal with their feelings.
Why I'd Read A Book About It - As the routine shows and the idea states, these two are trying to work out if they can be more then just friends. Those kinds of books tend to be some of my favs.
9). 2 Steps Away - Choreographer: Stacey Tookey, Dancers: Kathryn & Legacy, Season: 6
*Idea Behind Routine: A young woman trying to overcome a personal fear.
Why I'd Read A Book About It - I think everyone can relate to trying to overcome a fear of something, especially when you're young. Often you can feel as though you aren't good enough. Also I love the idea of fear itself having a narrative in the story. Whispering to the main character that she isn't good enough and then slowly that fading away as she realizes that she is :)
10a). No Air - Choreographers: Tabitha & Napolean, Dancers: Katie & Joshua, Season: 4

*Idea Behind Routine: A Solider tells his girlfriend he's leaving to go fight in the war.
10b). Heaven is a Place on Earth - Choreographer: Stacey Tookey, Dancers: Kathryn & Robert, Season: 7
Why I'd Read Books About Both of These Routines: Each deals with people personally effected by the military. Having grown up a military brat I've dealt with deployments, moving, goodbyes and everything in between. I usually have a very emotional reaction to these kinds of stories and they are very dear to my heart.
As I mentioned early Lauren came up with this idea and if you'd like to see her Top Ten (which include entire storylines and the authors who'd write them) go here.
~I know there are tons of routines that would make amazing books that I didn't include: Chelsie & Mark's "Bleeding Love", Allison & Robert's "Fix You", and Kayla & Kupono's "Gravity"/Addiction. It was SO hard to narrow it down to 10 (or you know 11, LOL). I wanted to highlight the show as well as my personal choices so I did a mix of choreographers, dancers and seasons. If you are a fan of SYTYCD what routine do you think would make for a great read?

Love your list! And we only had 2 dances overlap, which just goes to show how many AMAZING inspirations there are to pick from!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I would like Wade Robson to please choreograph my life, and then for Jakob Karr and Kathryn McCormick to dance it. That is all.
My freebie SYTYCD TTT
Love your topic, it's so original! And I love watching these routines.

My two picks didn't make the cut. Waaahhh.
ReplyDeleteO.O I went through and watched all of them! My favorite plot idea has to be #1 I'd read that in a heartbeat!!! I love when the girl main character is a beast! It makes me feel like maybe just maybe I could be like her... probably not but whateves.. lol! And I loved the jacket transfer move in the no air performance, I was like Aww! So sad!! Great list!
ReplyDeleteShae @ Understanding Shae's Story
Yes, I know I said I didn't have a fav and loved them all but #1 is extremely special. No Air is such a wonderful piece. I think it was the first time I cried from a lyrical hip hop routine.
DeleteWhat a great post! I'm definitely thoroughly entertained. :) I'm not much of a dancer, but I like watching it.
ReplyDeleteHere's mine

P.S. If you stop by be sure to check out my giveaway for any book under $15.
What a creative idea. I find dance boring so I didn't watch them, but I would LOVE to read a YA book about military brats. So awesome!
ReplyDeleteMy TTT
I think a YA book about military brats would be awesome too! I actually don't know why there aren't any.
DeleteI must tell you that I don't think anyone else will come up with this one! Delightful.
ReplyDeleteHere's my
Top Ten Books on Happiness. Please stop by!
Too. Much. Amazing. Dancing! Loving this list so much. My heart is all warm and fluttery.
ReplyDeleteWoaa. I think I have to send this link to a friend of mine. We don't have too many dance shows here in Germany as far as I can tell, and she's pretty much addicted to everything related to it, so.. *grin*

Such a wonderful choice for Top Ten Picks for today! I am going to add stuff from here!
ReplyDeleteHere is my Top Ten post!
This is just awesome. I was thinking that Wade Robson should choreograph all the dances ever, but then the rest of these were awesome too!
ReplyDeleteMy Top Ten
Really interesting take on a top ten list! I never thought of dancing = story potential in quite this way, love it!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the hell out of this post :D
ReplyDeleteThe "I Got You" and "No Air" routines will always be among of my favorites. Brought a lonely tear to my eye (hehe).
I would DEFINITELY read some of the stories that these inspire!
♥Isalys / Book Soulmates
I am fangirl flailing. You have no idea. Well, you probably do since your a huge fan yourself. This was such a creative post and I adore you for creating it!
ReplyDeleteYou truly have my head spinning with SYTYCD/book possibilities now!
Thanks, but the idea credit goes to Lauren. Thankfully we only had 2 routines in common. We didn't actually discuss which ones we were going to pick before hand. If you want even more awesome SYTYCD moments and story ideas, go check out her post too.
DeleteThanks, I will! Also, I do a recap post during the season with Not Now, I'm Reading called SYTYCD Saturdays, if you are interested in fan-girling with us. ;)
DeleteI think that dark Kayla and Kupono dance would make a fiery, dark read, as would the bench dance by Travis and Heidi. I mean, there are endless possibilities! :)
Love your choices! SYTYCD is awesome and I think it is great that you and Lauren only overlapped on a few. I would read any of the books you suggested especially the military one. If I could write a book based on a dance, it would probably be either the Hummingbird & the Flower with Jamie and Hok or the Vagabond dance with Jesus and Sara.
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific and original twist on Top Ten. Well done!
