Outlander Read-A-Long: Week 2 (Ch. 8-14) Answers

Week 2 of the Read-A-Long is now over. Hope you all had fun answering the questions I gave you for Chapters 8-14. If you'd like, you can check out my answers below.

Chapter 8 – 14 Questions & Answers

1. Claire has been given the task of healer at the castle. She must adapt her nursing skills for the time and learn what herbs and etc. will cure each particular ailment that is presented to her. Do you have any home remedies that were passed down to you (cure for a cold, bee sting or what have you)?

My dad is a doctor so you would think I would be able to answer this question better but honestly the only thing I can think of is tea with lemon or honey to calm a sore throat or mild cough. My mother-in-law is from Europe and she has lots more home remedies but of course I can’t think of any off the top of my head.

2. What do you think would be the biggest challenge of living in the past? (Clothing, hygiene, food, etiquette or etc.)

For me it’s a toss-up between hygiene (I’m not sure I could live without indoor plumbing and hot showers) and not having equal rights as a woman. Being told who to marry and feeling like the only value I have is giving my husband sons.

3. Do you have a favorite character, scene or quote so far? If so, share it with us.

I’m sure this won’t come as a surprise to anyone but Jamie is by far my favorite character. In these chapters I have two quotes that stuck out for me.

The serious one:

“There are things that I canna tell you, at least not yet. And I'll ask nothing of ye that ye canna give me. But what I would ask of ye---when you do tell me something, let it be the truth. And I'll promise ye the same. We have nothing now between us, save---respect, perhaps. And I think that respect has maybe room for secrets, but not for lies. Do ye agree?”

The one that made me giggle:

“Where did you learn to kiss like that?” I said, a little breathless. He grinned and pulled me close again. “I said I was a virgin, not a monk,” he said, kissing me again. “If I find I need guidance, I’ll ask.”

4. What did you think about the addition of the blood bond in the wedding ceremony? Is this something you would do with the one you love?

In theory I think the blood bond is romantic but in reality I probably would have fainted. Blood makes me really queasy. Now matching tattoos I could totally do. lol

5. Are you reading along closely with the scheduled chapters or are you ahead or behind?

I have read ahead. I am currently on Part Four – Chapter 24. I was trying not to get too far ahead but sometimes Jamie just calls to me.

  2. I agree, love your Jamie quotes:) And though I picked hygiene in the second question, I ABSOLUTELY couldn't agree more with your comment on women's equality. It is SO frustrating to read about the inequality between women and men, I don't find it romantic AT ALL, and it makes me very thankful to be a 21st century woman:)

  3. Ummm...are both my quotes from chapter 15? I will have to go back and look. That is what happens when you get ahead of the read-a-long. Bad Carrie!

  4. I loved that serious quote too! I almost put it in my post but couldn't remember if it was in chapter 14 or 15. It's great advice for any relationship and so well put.

  5. First...

“Where did you learn to kiss like that?” I said, a little breathless. He grinned and pulled me close again. “I said I was a virgin, not a monk,” he said, kissing me again. “If I find I need guidance, I’ll ask.”

    Second,

I totally agree with hygiene AND women's rights. I would most likely be burned as a witch. I have read through chapter 15 because let's face it, I needed to know what was under the kilt.

  6. I read 8-14 this weekend and since we were getting new questions today I read 15-21 too. It was REALLY difficult to stop. I can only imagine how bad it is going to be in a couple of weeks. ~Maggie

  7. Ha ha ... Jamie does that, doesn't he? :)

I didn't even think about equal rights as a woman! I was more about the hygiene and not bathing for days.

This is a reread for me, so it's easy to stop ... well, I did go on and read Chapter 15 -- I couldn't NOT read that one!

  8. I couldn't think of any off the top of my head either...haha

Those are both fantastic quotes :) The kissing/virgin quote made me smile just now...just love it!

I'm so happy you are reading ahead! I don't feel so horrible now, haha!

  10. Really, honey and lemon in tea is an official thing? We do that, but I thought it was just a thing we always did, not that it had any particular value lol! Good to know!

  11. FAB Quotes!! And it's ok that they're from Ch. 15 because I love them! :D

  12. I totally agree with what you said about the only value in women being giving their husband sons. I got a little nervous when Jamie talked about Claire's birthing hips! But he redeemed himself pretty well after that. Great quotes too!

  14. Love the quotes, I don't even care if they're from Chapter 15!!

Also I giggled at the tattoo thing!

Carrie, these questions were SO MUCH FUN for me. I hope I can make great questions too next week. I'm a bit nervous!

  15. Thanks for all the great feedback. I'm glad everyone found my questions fun for discussion. I'm so glad we did this read-a-long!

  16. I like that all of the people somehow related to the medical profession are ashamed about their lack of home remedies. Makes sense to me though! Considering a lot of them weren't all that helpful, it's not surprising they've been forgotten in lieu of modern medicine. I'm with you on women's rights though. I'd be killed so fast for mouthing off, and no one would ever marry me. :P
