Welcome to the second week of The Outlander Read-A-Long. Thanks so much for stopping by and taking part!I hope everyone is enjoying the book and excited to read more! First though I'm going to answer the questions from Chapters 1-7 that Jess @ Gone With the Words asked last week.
1. Outlander is a well-known book. Before you cracked it open, what were your expectations or assumptions about this story? Or did you jump into it with a blank slate?
I really wasn’t quite sure what to expect honestly. I was excited for the historical fiction element and a bit nervous about the romance element. I don’t really read “romance” books so I wasn’t sure if there would be corset busting and what have you.
2. Claire’s husband, Frank, is fascinated with learning more and more facts about his family tree, which extends back pretty far. Do you or anyone in your family keep a family tree? How many years/generations back does it go? If not, have you ever considered or attempted to create one?
Yes, my mom is a genealogy buff. She has traced both sides of our family pretty far back. I’m not sure how many generations back she has gone though. Her father’s side of the family traces back to Scotland though which is fun.
3. How did you find Claire’s initial conclusion as to her surroundings after waking up from going through the stones? Did you think that was a reasonable conclusion?
I could see how she would think she was in the middle of a reenactment at first. Growing up in the South we take our Civil War reenactments very seriously so I’m sure the Scots do as well.
4. How about her composed, rational way of dealing with the fact she’s traveled back in time. Did you find it believable? Do you think you would have acted the same way?
Claire definitely handled herself better than I would have. I’m pretty sure I would have slapped someone for suggesting I was a whore. lol
5. At this point in the story, what are your feelings or expectations on Claire and Jamie? Is Frank still a factor for you?
I am a little past chapter 7 now so I have to say that I am ready for some kissing. Yep, I said it. I know she is married but come on already and kiss him. Frank who? lol
Bonus Question: Frank encounters a man outside of the inn where he and Claire are staying. He is afraid it might have been a ghost. What do you believe it was? Do you have any predictions or suspicions on what that was about?
I honestly have no idea but I was kind of offended that he would jump to the conclusion that it was a past lover. How rude! (Says the girl hoping Claire kisses Jamie…obviously I have issues!)
Now onto our questions, which will cover Chapters 8-14.
1. Claire has been given the task of healer at the castle. She must adapt her nursing skills for the time and learn what herbs and etc will cure each particular ailment that is presented to her. Do you have any home remedies that were passed down to you (cure for a cold, bee sting or what have you)?
2. What do you think would be the biggest challenge of living in the past? (Clothing, hygiene, food, etiquette or etc.)
3. Do you have a favorite character, scene or quote so far? If so, share it with us.
4. What did you think about the addition of the blood bond in the wedding ceremony? Is this something you would do with the one you love?
5. Are you reading along closely with the scheduled chapters or are you ahead or behind?
Next week the Read-A-Long will move onto Jess @ Tangled Up in Blue and she's be asking questions for Chapters 15-21.

I just love romance books...I live for them! HA!
ReplyDeleteYAY for Scotland!
I would not have liked being called a whore either...that's for sure.
I'm already answering all of your question in my head! They are GOOD!
Southerners do love a reenactment ;)
ReplyDeleteFunny how a good romance makes you want some kissing & maybe a little bodice ripping in the near future.
Whore. I was like "what the crap! I'm standing right here."
I'm not participating in this event, but I am listening to this on audio book - it's 28 discs!! yikes!
ReplyDeleteI've read this before too, ages ago. The audio book is amazing. =)
I know ---bring on the kissing already huh?
ReplyDeleteI love reenactments! I think they are a blast to watch and I have even participated in a few. You can get caught up in them :)
Whore---I would have been fighting mad. :)
I don't read a ton of romance novels either, but I can appreciate a little corset busting now and then;)Actually I read so much YA these days that when i do read an adult title I get a little overly excited!
ReplyDeleteSee, I was SO ready for some kissing that I HAD to read ahead. I finally made myself stop at Ch. 17. I think everyone will have a hard time stopping after Ch. 14 this time!
I'm also from the South (FL) so yep, I completely agree w/ the reenactment possibility!
Bahaha, yes, I probably wouldn't have liked being called a whore either, lol. We have reenactments here in Texas too and they are SO FUN! I know you were very anxious for the kissing to start already, so I'm glad you got to read ahead a little more. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd great questions, btw!!
I was wary of the romance, too, but it has turned out to have (in my opinion) some of the most well-written romance scenes!
ReplyDeleteAnd that's cool that you can trace your family back to Scotland! It makes you wonder if anyone in your family ever had any run-ins with someone like Jamie :P
I lived in Scotland for 20 years, and I hate to disappoint you, but I don't remember any reenactments being widely advertised. Also, in 1945 people were still involved in the war effort: my grandfather was not discharged from the army until 1951 and rationing was still in full force. I don't think reenactment was top of their agenda at that time! :)
ReplyDeleteI forgot they thought she was a whore. I loved that she didn't hold her tongue. But I also liked that they thought she might be a spy, which means that they thought she was smart, despite being a woman. Cannot wait to read some more! ~dixie
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOODNESS. I had no idea y'all were doing this! I bought these books (1-5 at the time) a few years back and made it to the fourth book before I got sucked into other genres. Jamie Frasier is one of my all time favorite book boyfriends....EVER. I so hope you enjoy reading this amazing, fantastic, heart-pounding series!
ReplyDeleteI adore Claire. I absolutely would punch someone for calling me a whore. She's just such a fierce, fabulous character. And her interaction with Jamie. *clings to them*
Frank who? YES! I agree! :D I'm not sure if I've ever mentioned that Jamie Frasier is probably my favorite fictional male character EVER! *swoon* Have I told you that? ;)
ReplyDeleteyes, Frank wasn't really a factor for me from the beginning. Before I even started the book, I was kinda annoyed he existed, so I was ready to dump him pretty early on :) ~dixie
ReplyDeleteLol, corset busting. I'm with you though, I'm ready for some KISSING!! <--said like 'are you ready for some football?!' in my head btw.
ReplyDeleteI'm STILL not there (only on chapter 10).
