Follow Friday - Favorite TV Show

Follow Friday is hosted by Rachel of Parajunkee's View

Follow Friday Question of the week:

Share your current fav television show!

Tell us a bit about it...

I've talked several times about my love for all things British, especially when it comes to their TV shows. I find that I have a similar sense of humor and would probably fit in very well if I ever moved there. Anyways I want to say that I prefer the original UK Skins & Being Human to their US counterparts. I also really like Merlin, Misfits, and Torchwood, however my absolute favorite is DOCTOR WHO.
I have been watching Doctor Who since I was a kid, my mom got me hooked on it sometime around the 4th Doctor (we're now on the 11th). If you're not familiar with the show, its been airing since the 60's and focuses on a 900 year old time lord called THE DOCTOR. He travels with various companions in the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space) and can regenerate himself when dying. Its all very Sci-Fi, but surprisingly dramatic and I LOVE IT!!! To drive home my point of how awesome the show is and how nerdy I am, please watch the videos below!

Musical tribute featuring the last 3 Doctors!

Amazing fan trailer if you've never seen the show!

Found these on youtube. Thanks goes to the peeps that made them!

Review - Vesper

Need to Know Info:

Title: Vesper
Author: Jeff Sampson
Format: Hardcover, 304 pages
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Release Date: January 25, 2011
Rating: 4 out of 5 HEARTS

Synopsis from Goodreads
Emily Webb is a geek and she's happy that way. Content hiding under hoodies and curling up to watch old horror flicks, she's never been the kind of girl who sneaks out for midnight parties. But something is happening to Emily and soon she's getting into fights and flirting with other girls' boyfriends, all on the same night one of her classmates-also named Emily-is found murdered.

With every nightfall, Emily gets wilder until it's no longer just her personality that changes, but her body too. She's now stronger, faster, and utterly fearless. And soon Emily realizes that she's not just coming out of her shell...there's something much bigger going on. Is she bewitched by the soul of the other, murdered Emily? Or is she becoming something else entirely-something not human?

My Always Spoiler-Free* Review (*unless otherwise noted)
Vesper is a paranormal mystery, told through two very different and alternating points of view. One being a transcribed conversation between two people and the other through Emily's first person narrative.  The result should seem confusing and disjointed but instead produces an addicting, heart pounding adventure, that had me furiously turning pages. Author Jeff Sampson manages to mix multiple genres effortlessly and still create a strong, and very complex main character.

I really enjoyed this novel from the murder-mystery, to the paranormal twist you may or may not see coming. I won't talk a lot about it because I was honestly surprised by it and I think it adds a great layer to the story if you don't know what's going on. There's also a little romance thrown in to, but its not the main focus of the story, which I found rather refreshing.

I liked the pacing of the novel since it builds up to both its reveals rather nicely. The backstory to both parts was also well done and gets explained with out being confusing or extremely unbelievable. Though as its the first in a series, there are other things that are left a mystery and only briefly touched on.

While I didn't always find Emily the easiest character to like, it definitely wasn't a deal breaker for me because it all gets explained later and I continued to root & sympathized with her. I also really appreciated her bravery, cleverness and determination. She never gives up trying to figure out what's going on with herself or digging into who might have killed the other Emily, even after it becomes very dangerous for her.

Their are some really interesting minor characters that I wish we could have spent more time with. In fact my only real complaint with the novel is how over crowded it was with supporting characters. Many just seemed to be used as filler while other smaller, but actually more important characters got very little development. I'm pretty sure this was actually done intentionally, but I did find it a bit frustrating.

The ending is left very open, I'm not sure I would call it a cliffhanger necessarily but its not all wrapped up either. While that may annoy some people, I found it quite fitting and very true to the narrative that was put in place. I think Vesper is a great start to what I'm sure will continue to be a very interesting and unique series.

"Waiting On" Wednesday #13

"Waiting On" is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

What I'm "Waiting On" this week...

ON THE FRINGE by Courtney King Walker
Release Date: October 19, 2011 from Lands Atlantic Publishing

Claire is struggling to overcome the murder of her childhood friend and secret crush, Daniel. Everyone else seems to be moving on with their lives, but she's still trying to cope. The fact that she finds herself alone and drowning on her 16th birthday isn't helping.
Neither is thinking she sees Daniel's face in murky water as she mysteriously resurfaces. But something happened during those four and a half minutes that will make her realize it was not just her imagination.
As Claire and Daniel try to grasp a possible reconnection, other grudge-holding beings have plans of their own. Now, the two of them have to decide if their fleeting relationship is worth the possibility of Claire being trapped on the fringe forever.

On The Fringe sounds like its going to be a mix of different genres and I usually enjoy books like that. Plus the premise sounds so good! Also this cover is absolutely stunning, its what first drew me to the book, but really isn't that what covers are suppose to do?

What are you "Waiting On"?

Adapt Me - The Lying Game

At the beginning of the month I told you about the possibility of The Lying Game becoming a TV series. Well after a few weeks of discussion, ABC Family has officially ordered the pilot, based on the novel by Sara Shepard, to series. It originally seemed as if some casting changes would be made to the pilot before it was ordered to series, but that doesn't seem to have happened. Also as of right now, its unclear how many episodes will be filmed or when it will actually air.

The Lying Game is about Emma, a kind-hearted foster kid who finds out she has an identical twin sister, Sutton, who was adopted by wealthy parents, only to go missing under mysterious circumstances.

I will keep you updated on the project as I get news about it. If you have any thoughts, feel free to share them below. I always love hearing from you.

I already finished this one, but thought I'd tease it anyways.

 My Teaser:

The clock ticked away on my computer from 8:07 to 8:11 and still I couldn't stop from sitting there, staring at my computer screen and feeling utterly embarrassed by that one stupid comment.
And then, at 8:14, my guts twisted and I gasped.
A massive shudder ran through my body, as though the ground was quaking beneath me, and I fell out of my chair onto the floor.
I clutched my stomach and tried to call out, but the only sound I could make was a pitiful squeak. Whatever this was-a seizure?-wasn't stopping, and I couldn't breathe, and I couldn't move, and no one could help me, and oh God was I going to die?

Review - Memento Nora

Need To Know Info:

Title: Memento Nora
Author: Angie Smibert
Format: Hardcover, 192 pages
Publisher: Marshall Cavendish Children's Books
Release Date: April 1st, 2011
Rating: 4 out of 5 HEARTS

ARC Received through Good Golly Miss Holly ARC Tour

Short Synopsis
Nora James lives in a future where terrorist attacks are so common, you can take a pill that makes you forget anything you don't want to remember. After Nora witnesses a bombing with her mother and then has a strange encounter with a boy from her school, she isn't so sure she wants to forget.

My Always Spoiler-Free* Review (*unless otherwise noted)
Memento Nora is a compelling dystopian told in alternating points of view between Nora, Micah and Winter, 3 teens who have little in common except for their need to remember the past. Since the novel is so short, the plot does move rather quickly, not insanely fast, but I will admit to getting a bit confused once or twice. It's length also had me a little worried that I wouldn't have enough time to really get to know the characters, but that definitely wasn't the case. Author Angie Smibert does a really wonderful job of giving each character a distinct voice and very different personalities, while still making all 3 very likable.

Winter and Micah are already very close, Nora's introduction throws the pair for a loop, but thankfully not in the way you might expect. The dynamic between the trio is really interesting because they don't become instant friends, there's a slow build up to it and even then its layered with trust issues. While you spend the most time with either Nora or Micah and their increased interest in each other, I really felt Winter was the more intriguing character. She seems to remain such a mystery even after you get to know her and I loved the relationship between her and her grandfather.

The world the novel takes place in isn't very far removed from our own, which allows it to feel much more personal. There is also a great cast of supporting characters throughout the novel, many just as interesting as our main trio and some not at all what you'd expect.

My only real complaint was that more time wasn't spent on the government and political backstory of how the world ended up the way it did. It's touch on a little bit, but I definitely would have liked more information about it.

The ending of this novel left me completely shocked because although I should have seen it coming, I really didn't. I'm really glad the author is working on a sequel, since it gives the ending much more depth. I have no idea where the author is planning to take the story, but I'm very excited to find out!

Adapt Me - Forgotten

Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) is set to star in the film version of Cat Patrick's debut novel Forgotten for Paramount Pictures. The project is still in very early stages, as the script is still being written and no other cast or crew have signed on. Forgotten tells the story of 16 year-old London Lane who loses her memory each night and in the morning only has a note telling her about the day before. When London starts experiencing disturbing visions she can't make sense of, she realizes it's time to learn a little more about the past she keeps forgetting-before it destroys her future. The novel is set for a June release from Little Brown Publishing.

I think this project sound like a great fit for Hailee and I'm glad to see her choosing interesting roles. The novel sounds amazing and I can't wait to read it for myself. As always I will keep you updated as the film develops and feel free to share your thoughts below!

Thanks to Deadline Hollywood for the scoop.

Follow Friday is hosted by Rachel of Parajunkee's View

Follow Friday Question of the week:

If you are a fan of Science Fiction what is your favorite book? If you haven't read Science Fiction before...any inkling to? Anything catch your eye?

I don't usually read much Sci-Fi, but I do watch a lot of it! Doctor Who anyone? I think Across the Universe sounds amazing though & I haven't heard a single negative thing about it, so I will definitely be reading that one!

Adapt Me - The Secret Circle

Britt Robertson (who was most recently seen in the CW's Life Unexpected as Lux) is on her way back to the network as the lead in the drama pilot Secret Circle. The script was written by Andrew Miller and Kevin Williamson and is based on the book series by L.J. Smith author of The Vampire Diaries. Secret Circle tells the story of a young California teen (Robertson) who moves to her mom's hometown of New Salem and discovers that she is a witch.

No other casting announcements have been made at this time, but as always I promise to keep you in the loop. What do you think of this casting choice? As someone who hasn't read the books, I don't really have much of an opinion yet, but I did liked Britt on Life Unexpected. Also some of you might recognize her from the TV Movie Avalon High, which was nothing like the Meg Cabot book it was based on, where she played Allie Pennington. Got any thoughts, share them below!

"Waiting On" Wednesday #12

"Waiting On" is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

What I'm "Waiting On" this week...

THE A CIRCUIT by Georgina Bloomberg & Catherine Hapka
Release Date: May 24th, 2011 by Bloomsbury USA

From Goodreads
The A Circuit is the top of the top when it comes to horse shows. It's a world with its own rules and superprivileged lifestyles. Teens travel the circuit all year, showing horses that cost as much as some homes.

Tommi, Kate, and Zara are all elite competitors on the circuit, but they come from totally different backgrounds. Tommi is a billionaire heiress trying to prove she has real talent (not just deep bank accounts). Kate puts the working in working student—every win has been paid for with hours of cleaning stalls. She's used to the grueling schedule, but Fitz, the barn's resident hot guy, is about to become a major distraction. And then there's Zara. She's the wild child of a famous rockstar, but she's ready to take riding seriously. Can a party girl really change her ways?

Peek into the elite world of competitive horseback riding in this exciting new series full of friendships, drama & fierce competition.

I really wish I could get my hands on a copy of The A Circuit right now, I think it sounds so good! When I was younger I used to volunteered at the horse stables near my house, plus I loved to ride a lot too. Although I don't do it much anymore, I still feel really at home around horses. This is definitely my kind of book!

 My Teaser:

Mom looked as gray as I felt. She didn't look at me. She washed down the pill the doctor handed her with greedy gulps of water. Her face went slack. Glossy, not all there.
She came to the clinic at least once a week. Now I knew why. And this time it was because of me. How long had this been going on?
Would she have put up with her life if she remembered? Would anybody? Would I?
I stared at the pill in the doctor's fat, pink hand.
"It doesn't hurt, Nora," mom said. Her nonglossy smile told me I wasn't getting out of here without taking the pill.
I put it in my mouth and...

This Is Me, Talking About My Blog

I just wanted to mention a few things about my blog, that I've been asked about.

I DON'T nor will I ever post rumors, especially when it comes to my ADAPT ME posts. Whether its an author's rumored project, casting rumors for film or TV projects based on books or anything else book related. I will only post information which is 100% confirmed.

I can usually only read one to two books a week. I have a part-time job, a hubby and 2 kids, so that keeps me pretty busy, but I love to read and try and do so every night. I post about one review a week, but I would like to upgrade that to two.

I do enjoy reading adult titles, but lately I just haven't been in the mood to read anything outside YA. I'm sure this will change, so don't be surprised to find a non-YA review popping up every now & then.

Finally, I just want to say how much I appreciate all of my blog & twitter followers. Thanks so much!

The BookStalker Wants to Know...#4

Where do you buy most of your books from? Do you purchase most of your them from an independent bookstore, larger chain or online? Or do you get them some other way?

For me I buy almost all my books from Borders, both in store and online, so I'm really saddened by the news that they'll be closing many of their stores due to financial problems. Hopefully they don't completely shut down. I do order from The Book Depository too, but usually only if I absolutely have to have the foreign cover of a book or when its a title I don't have to have right away. Unfortunately, there aren't any independent bookstores where I live, which is really a shame since I love shopping in them. Whenever I go visit my parents in Virginia, I always try and support the local bookstores in their town by picking up a few things.

Follow Friday - Romance Hero Type

Follow Friday is hosted by Rachel of Parajunkee's View

Follow Friday Question of the week:

What's your favorite romance hero type? Stereotype wise. Do you like the strong silent type or the brute macho man?

For me it really just depends on the personality of the character, but more often then not, I fall for the sarcastic, loyal and often under appreciated best friend. Case in point...Jacob, Gale, Puck, need I go on. I often feel like I'm in the minority on this one, since everyone else seems to prefer the mysterious, bad boy types and I clearly like my guys a little more accessible. Plus is it really so impossible to notice the cute guy who's right in front of your face? Seriously!

Adapt Me - Perks of Being A Wallflower

It may have been rumored for months, but it looks like its finally official that Emma Watson & Logan Lerman will be starring in Summit Entertainments adaption of Stephan Chbosky's novel The Perks of Being A Wallflower. The movie is set to begin filming this summer with Lerman playing Charlie, a teen dealing with a very serious crush (Watson) and his best friend's suicide. What do you think of the casting choices? I think these two will be great, although it does make me wonder if their going to make the character of Charlie slightly older. Share your thoughts below and as always I will keep you updated on the project as it continues to develop.

Cover Release - The Faerie Ring

Kiki Hamilton just released the cover of her 2011 YA debut novel, The Faerie Ring. What do you think?

I LOVE how the cover focuses more on the object then on the girl and I really like the mystery behind it. Why is the ring glowing? Who is the girl?  Plus the font is GORGEOUS. Let me know what you think and then head on over to Kiki's blog and share your thoughts with her!

Review - Enclave

Need to Know Info:

Title: Enclave
Author: Ann Aguirre
Format: Hardcover, 259 pages
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Release Date:  April 11th, 2011
Rating: 3 out of 5 HEARTS

ARC received through Good Golly Miss Holly ARC Tour

Synopsis from Goodreads
Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember. As a Huntress, her purpose is clear--to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She's worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing's going to stop her, not even a brooding Hunter named Fade.

When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce's troubles are just beginning. Fade doesn't like following orders. At first she thinks he's crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don't always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth.

As Deuce's perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy... but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster and no matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she's ever known.

My Always Spoiler-Free* Review (*unless otherwise noted)
Enclave is a fast-paced dystopian, with intense action that promises to keep you turning pages! Although the plot isn't anything all that original, Ann Aguirre has carved out her own voice in the genre with a group of tough-as-nails characters, who you won't soon forget.

I didn't find Deuce the easiest character to relate to, since she often seems disconnected from other people and reacts more out of instinct then emotion. She tends to justify why horrible things have happen, instead of properly dealing with how she feels about them. I do admire the fighter in her though, since she's certainly not the kind of girl who needs to be rescued, but rather is often the one doing the rescuing. I do think that Deuce becomes more vulnerable as the novel goes on and I enjoyed seeing that side of her, but I would never say that she ends up going soft.

Fade isn't your typical silent, brooding type, as he's been ostracized from his peers more by force then his own choosing. Although hardened by his situation, he hasn't completely cut himself off either and is more emotionally reactive then others in the Enclave. Fade's constant determination to survive no matter what the cost, and his absolute need for the truth, allow him to truly be the heart of the story.

I found the beginning to be a bit frustrating, as your introduced to a lot of characters very quickly and it was difficult to remember who was who and who did what. I also felt that a few parts were a bit forced, especially when Fade & Deuce were fighting, as it didn't seem to fit into the trust that was building up between them. We also meet two new central characters later in the book and I just couldn't identify or sympathize with one of them at all.

The constant running and brutal fight scenes keep up a thriller like pace, but its really some of the slower, quiet moments that I loved the most. These certainly helped flesh out the characters back stories and allowed for some tender and unexpected moments.

The ending is well done because you aren't left with some huge jaw-dropping cliff-hanger, but rather the door is kept open for a sequel. I'm very interested to see where the story is headed, how Deuce will handle herself and if we'll learn more about the past. Although not flawless, Enclave is still a great read and definitely worth a look.

"Waiting On" Wednesday #11

Again I only picked one book this week, instead of two.

"Waiting On" is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

What I'm "Waiting On" this week...

Shadows on the Moon by Zoe Marriott
Release Date: July 2011 by Walker Books

 From Goodreads
Suzume is a shadow-weaver. She can create mantles of darkness and light, walk unseen in the middle of the day, change her face. She can be anyone she wants to be. Except herself.

Suzume died officially the day the Prince's men accused her father of treason. Now even she is no longer sure of her true identity.
Is she the girl of noble birth living under the tyranny of her mother’s new husband, Lord Terayama? A lowly drudge scraping a living in the ashes of Terayama’s kitchens? Or Yue, the most beautiful courtesan in the Moonlit Lands?

Everyone knows Yue is destined to capture the heart of a prince. Only she knows that she is determined to use his power to destroy Terayama.

And nothing will stop her. Not even love.

Shadows on the Moon sounds so intriguing, don't you think? I know that it doesn't sound like anything I've ever read before, which has me completely fascinated! It's so hard to be original anymore and this novel seems like it will definitely be that. So excited!

I Heart - The Hunger Games

In case you didn't know, I'm a huge fan of The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. I absolutely devoured the books and have succeeded in getting many of my friends to read them as well. I'm also extremely excited that Suzanne Collins is writing the screenplay for the movie because it means that she'll have a huge part in how it turns out. Now while we're all waiting to see who they cast as Katniss, Peeta & Gale, I thought it would be fun to share my dream cast choices for the roles and a few fan-made videos too. Feel free to share your thoughts on who you think should play the trio!

Katniss Everdeen - Kaya Scodelario
Where you've seen her: Playing Effy Stonem on the UK series Skins & a small role playing Peshet in Clash of the Titans.
Up next: Playing Catherine Earnshaw in the updated film version of Wuthering Heights.
Why she's my Katniss: She's a brilliant actress, as proven in Skins and extremely captivating to watch even when saying very little. She looks very similar to how I envisioned Katniss, is only 18 and isn't well known. I strongly believe that Katniss should be played by a lesser known actress and NOT a star name.

Peeta Mellark - Lucas Till
Where you've seen him:  Playing Travis Brody in Hannah Montana the Movie & as Taylor Swift's neighbor/crush in her "You Belong With Me" music video.
Up next:  Playing Cpl. Scott Grayston in Battle: Los Angeles & Alex Summers in X-MEN: First Class
Why he's my Peeta: I'll be honest in saying I haven't seen much in the way of his acting ability, but he looks the part. He gives off the whole boy next door vibe and looks strong without being buff, if that makes any sense. He's 20, but definitely looks younger and like Kaya isn't a well known actor.
Lucas Till 9 Pictures, Images and Photos

Gale Hawthorne - Luke Pasqualino
Lysander 2 Pictures, Images and Photos
Where you've seen him: Playing Freddie Mclair on the UK series Skins
Up Next: Playing Greg in Apparition alongside Ashley Greene and Tom Felton & as the young William Adama in the Battlestar Galactica Prequel: Blood & Chrome.
Why he's my Gale: Before I ever saw an episode of Skins, Luke is how I picture Gale in my head, coincidence, I think not. He's a great actor too and at only 20, is close to the right age. He's also very good friends with Kaya, so the strong friendship between Katniss & Gale would already be there. Plus those 2 have great on-screen chemistry!

Here are 2 fan-made Hunger Games videos & 1 for Catching Fire. I didn't make these, just thought they were really well done and wanted to share them. Also neither of the HG videos contains spoilers, which is nice, but of course the CF one does, so please don't watch it if you haven't read the second book.  All feature Kaya as Katniss. Lucas is Peeta in the first one, which is done like a movie trailer, while Alex Pettyfer is Peeta in the other two. Also Steven R. McQueen who plays Jeremy on The Vampire Diaries was used as Gale. Enjoy!
