I have 2 book to movie related questions....
1. When planning to see the film adaption of a novel you've never read, do you always have to read the novel first or can you wait?
2. If you find out a book in your TBR pile is going to be made into a movie, does that impact your decision on how soon you'll read it?
For me, I almost always have to read the book before I see the movie, unless I didn't know the film was based on a novel. However it certain instants, like Harry Potter, I saw The Sorcerer's Stone before I went and read all the books. It most cases the book is always better, in fact its really hard to think of an example where this isn't true, although Forrest Gump comes to mind. Also unlike most people I tend to get more upset if I read the book after, because then I'm annoyed by all the things that were changed or absent from the film. I'm not sure why this doesn't bother me if I've read the book first, but it doesn't.
This has happened more and more frequently, but yes I am much more likely to read a book sooner if I know its being made into a film. There are a couple reasons for this, first I already want to read the book or it wouldn't be in my TBR pile. Second, I will have to read it before I see the film version anyways, as pointed out above and lastly because I love hearing about all the casting/filming news and its not as much fun to hear or share, if you've never read the book. Oh and one more, I despise most movie tie-in covers, I don't like the way they look like movie posters!
I'd love to know what you think, sound off below!

I like seeing the movie before...then the book sort of fills in all the gaps. When I read the book before I'm just mad at the movie for lacking all the great things I loved about the book.

I will ALWAYS read the book before the film because I know that the movie will never live up. So yes, I will push up my review of a book based on a film release date :)
ReplyDelete1) If I discover that a book is being turned into a movie, I won't necessarily read the book unless it's already on my TBR...in which case I prefer to read the book before the I see the movie.
ReplyDelete2) I don't think I'll necessarily run to read the book if the movie release date is looming, unless (again) it's been on my TBR and it's gotten rave reviews from fellow book lovers!
Bottom line...movies don't really affect my book/reading decisions. It's more the other way around :)

I prefer to read the book before the movie if it's a book that I'm interested in. Sometimes though, I may go and see a film, expecting to not like it and then love it, then I'll read the book after, because before I saw it I didn't think I'd enjoy it so I didn't want to read it. Also, talking of books made into movies, I hate movies that come out, then a book comes out after that has been based on the film. That's just backwards... :L
ReplyDeleteI definitely want to read the book. I don't really usually need to be in a big hurry to read it, though, because we almost always wait until the movie comes out on DVD. I just read Eat, Pray, Love, and now am going to watch the movie - although I have low expectations. The movies are never as good as the book - but I usually enjoy them anyway.
ReplyDeleteI actually prefer to see the movie before reading the book because if I'm planning to read the book AND watch the movie because I know movies always change things so there are still surprises when I read the book. If I read the book first though I can't guarantee I won't get annoyed at changes when I see the movie. Like in the case of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson I saw the first movies for both before starting the series but I of course thought the books were better in both cases. In case of movie was better then book I'll have to say The Lord of the Rings, those books really bored me but the movies were great.
ReplyDeleteI've seen too many books to movies that change so much and don't quite live up to the book that I just can't compare them anymore. I usually try to read the book first. But I don't like sitting there going "Oh that's not how it happened in the book" so if I don't read it first, that's okay. I just try to enjoy the cinematic experience.
ReplyDeleteI really like to have read the book before the I've seen the movie- unless it's a book I don't really want to read, but I'll watch the movie. I saw The Golden Compass before I read the book and that was ok because the movie was so different that it felt like a different story.
ReplyDeleteIf I know a movie is going to be made from a book in my TBR, I'll bump it up and try to have it read before I see the film. Movies and books are my two favourite things.
I don't have to read a book before watching its movie but would prefer to have read the book first. However, reading a book can ruin a movie. For example, I loved the book "Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold but detested the movie. It just goes to prove that you can't judge a book by its movie.
ReplyDeleteInteresting discussion! If I loved a book, I tend to avoid the movie because it's never quite as good. However, if I enjoyed the movie, I might then read the book to fill in the gaps. For instance, I loved the Harry Potter series so much that I won't watch any of the movies. I prefer the characters in my imagination to those on the silver screen. ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Shannon! I got my book today! I had already made up my IMM post so it will go in next weeks. Thanks so much! So excited to read it! The cover is sooooooooo sooo pretty!

Yes, I always must read the book first if I have any plans on seeing the movie. If I don't, then it's really difficult for me to get into reading the book afterward.
ReplyDeleteA series that I've seen the movies but not the books: The Lord of the Rings. I loved the movies but just couldn't get into the books when I attempted to read them before seeing the movie.
I almost always read the book before the movie, because I enjoy seeing what they changed when the book was made into the film. I also feel much more connected to the characters, story, and plot.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to reading a book, when I know the movie is coming out, I'll only read the book if it interests me.
I usually watch movies that are based on books I've read but then I get annoyed at missing things. Course they can't be perfect but some are worse than others.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, if I watch a movie, liked it, and found out it was based on a book, I might try and read it. Aylee made a good case in point. I loved LoTR too, but the books..not so much.
I almost always prefer to read the book before seeing the movie (and before the movie's release). I like picturing the characters and scenes my own way and don't want to be influenced by the movie.
